Unity Against Embargoes
In a significant address to the Women Parliamentarians Group at the TURKPA meeting in Baku, İzlem Gürçağ Altuğra, a prominent member of the National Unity Party (UBP) from the TRNC, highlighted the necessity for unified action among Turkic nations to combat international embargoes.
Altuğra’s speech underscored the critical role that collective effort can play in overcoming economic and social challenges imposed by these restrictions.
A Call for Solidarity
Altuğra expressed her gratitude for Azerbaijan's unwavering support, particularly noting President Ilham Aliyev’s symbolic gestures, such as the display of the TRNC flag at Azerbaijani events. "By standing together, we can unlock significant opportunities for economic development and social welfare," Altuğra stated, emphasizing the potential of collaborative efforts to drive progress.
She further addressed the detrimental impacts of embargoes on vulnerable groups within Northern Cyprus, particularly women and youth. Altuğra called for strengthened international collaboration to mitigate these adverse effects, advocating for policies that promote economic resilience and social inclusion.
Historical and Strategic Context
The meeting in Baku is part of a broader initiative under the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) to foster deeper cooperation among Turkic-speaking countries. Established to promote shared cultural, economic, and political interests, the OTS has been instrumental in creating a unified front against external pressures. This includes the development of shared educational and cultural projects, which aim to strengthen the bonds between member states.
Strategic Infrastructure and Energy Projects
In line with this cooperative spirit, recent discussions between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President Aliyev have focused on significant infrastructure projects like the Zangezur corridor. This corridor, connecting Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave and directly to eastern Türkiye, is poised to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration.
Altuğra’s call to action at the TURKPA meeting is a reminder of the power of unity in facing global challenges. By leveraging collective strengths and fostering robust partnerships, the Turkic world can navigate and counteract the impacts of international embargoes, ensuring a resilient and prosperous future for its members.
