Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Peace in Cyprus
As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation on July 20, 1974, we reflect on a pivotal moment that ensured the survival and security of the Turkish Cypriot community.
This operation ended the brutal attempts at ethnic cleansing by Greek Cypriots, establishing peace and safeguarding the rights of Turkish Cypriots. Today, we celebrate not only our past struggles but also our ongoing journey towards a stable and sovereign Northern Cyprus.
The Cyprus Peace Operation was a response to over a decade of oppression and violence against Turkish Cypriots. In the face of existential threats, the intervention by Turkey marked a turning point, allowing Turkish Cypriots to live freely and securely in their homeland. This day symbolizes our unwavering resolve and the unbreakable bond with Turkey, which continues to be our staunch ally and protector.
A Beacon of Stability Amidst Global Turmoil
In the contemporary global landscape, marked by conflicts in regions like Gaza and Ukraine, the importance of security for the prosperity of any community is underscored. The 1974 intervention granted Turkish Cypriots the chance to organize their societal structures and foster a peaceful and cohesive community, a testament to the enduring spirit of our people.
As we honor this historic milestone, we are joined by high-level representatives from Turkey, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, reflecting the deep ties and mutual commitment between Turkey and Northern Cyprus. This celebration is a powerful reminder of our shared history and the collective efforts that have fortified our existence.
The Journey of Turkish Cypriot Resilience
The Turkish Cypriot community has navigated numerous challenges and made significant sacrifices to reach its current state. Our history, marked by the 1960 Republic of Cyprus establishment, the Bloody Christmas attacks of 1963, and subsequent years of isolation and hardship, highlights our resilience. Despite being forcibly removed from the 1960 Republic, Turkish Cypriots never relinquished their quest for self-governance and eventually founded the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 1983.
Prominent leaders like Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş championed the cause of Turkish Cypriot sovereignty, emphasizing the value of an independent state. The TRNC, with its fully functioning institutions, stands as a beacon of our identity, home, and nationhood.
The Realities of Federal Solution Negotiations
The repeated failures of federal solution negotiations, most notably at Crans-Montana in 2017, have demonstrated the infeasibility of a federal union between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities. The uncompromising stance of the Greek Cypriot leadership has underscored the need for a realistic approach to the island's future, one that recognizes the de facto situation of two distinct states.
Today, the vision for a solution in Cyprus rests on the principles of sovereign equality and equal international status. This perspective, advocated by President Ersin Tatar, reflects the lived realities on the island and aims to achieve a just, sustainable, and lasting peace.
Commitment to Sovereignty and Independence
As we move forward, the Turkish Cypriot community remains steadfast in its commitment to independence, sovereignty, and the cherished partnership with Turkey. The 50th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation is not only a time to remember past victories but also to reaffirm our dedication to a secure and prosperous future for Northern Cyprus.
"Our determination to protect the sovereignty and independence of our state is unshakable," said President Ersin Tatar in a recent statement. "We will continue to work towards a fair and lasting solution that respects the rights and realities of both communities on the island".
