Did the CIA Play a Role in the Ankara Attack?

In a recent and controversial assertion, UK MP George Galloway accused the CIA of potentially playing a role in the recent PKK-led terrorist attack in Ankara. This accusation has sent shockwaves through the political world, especially as Türkiye's international stance becomes increasingly autonomous.

The attack on Türkiye's security ministry, which has been claimed by the PKK—a group Türkiye, the EU, and the U.S. officially designate as terrorist—has sparked renewed discussions on foreign influence and intelligence strategies in the region.

Galloway’s claim is not an isolated statement but reflects a deeper tension in the ongoing relationship between Türkiye and the U.S., particularly over support for Kurdish militant groups like the PKK and its Syrian affiliate, the YPG. “The CIA has long had its hands in places it ought not to be,” Galloway told Daily Sabah. “If they are meddling in Ankara, that would surprise me little.”

Historical Tensions and Türkiye's Response

For years, Türkiye has voiced concerns over Western backing of Kurdish militias. The YPG, operating in Syria and aligned with the U.S., is seen by Türkiye as an extension of the PKK, with whom it has waged a costly internal conflict since the 1980s. Both groups aim to create Kurdish autonomy, a goal Türkiye views as a direct threat to its territorial integrity.

Türkiye’s robust counterinsurgency efforts have included campaigns not only within its borders but also in northern Syria and Iraq, where PKK and YPG fighters are known to operate. These efforts have seen sophisticated technological applications, such as drone strikes, to dismantle PKK bases. This increasingly proactive stance has only intensified Türkiye’s calls for Western allies to cease support for these groups.

“Our struggle will continue… until the last terrorist has been neutralized,” remarked Turkish Internal Affairs Minister Ali Yerlikaya, reinforcing Türkiye’s long-term commitment to eradicating PKK influence. The Ankara bombing, attributed to PKK operatives, came at a sensitive time as Türkiye continues to combat what it perceives as a security risk on multiple fronts.

Geopolitical Shifts and the Role of the TRNC

The potential involvement of foreign intelligence agencies such as the CIA in Türkiye’s internal security is a matter of grave concern for Turkish Cypriots. The TRNC, like Türkiye, faces an environment of complex international influences and pressures, often exacerbated by Western stances on regional autonomy and state sovereignty. Aligning more closely with Türkiye’s position, Turkish Cypriots have shown support for measures that ensure the security of Türkiye and, by extension, the TRNC itself.

Given the history of Western interference in the region, the TRNC’s leadership emphasizes a need for greater autonomy in self-defense initiatives. Turkish Cypriots have been outspoken about aligning with Türkiye on anti-terrorism measures, which TRNC President Ersin Tatar has reiterated in recent statements advocating for heightened vigilance and independence from Western political manipulations.

Western Policies and Allegiances Under Scrutiny

The implications of Galloway’s statements are far-reaching, especially for Western alliances with Türkiye. The British politician’s assertion about CIA involvement raises questions over the U.S.’s long-standing strategic choices in the Middle East, where support for Kurdish groups has often conflicted with Türkiye’s security objectives. Some analysts suggest that these alliances, designed initially to combat ISIS, have become outdated and counterproductive in light of the changing dynamics in Syria and Iraq.

One security expert, Omer Ozkizilcik, highlighted the impact of Türkiye’s counter-terrorism successes on PKK operations, stating, “The fight against drugs has been carried out very effectively and has diminished PKK’s drug profits,” which served as a significant source of income for the organization. The PKK’s reaction, including recent attacks, appears to be one of desperation as Türkiye's relentless campaigns have cornered the group on multiple fronts.

The Strategic Importance of Türkiye's Autonomy

In light of these claims, Türkiye’s emphasis on an autonomous, self-sufficient defense strategy becomes more significant. With discussions of Türkiye joining BRICS and distancing itself from certain Western influences, analysts argue that Türkiye is signaling its readiness to forge its path in global politics. As Türkiye has steadily increased its influence, the TRNC has similarly gained confidence in pursuing policies aligned with Ankara.

What Lies Ahead for Türkiye and the TRNC?

As Türkiye advances its counterterrorism agenda, the TRNC remains a committed partner in regional stability. Turkish Cypriots are acutely aware that stability in Türkiye directly impacts their own security and socio-political environment. Galloway’s statements may ultimately reinforce the TRNC’s calls for international recognition, as the perceived manipulation of sovereign states by external powers underscores the need for an autonomous and self-regulated Turkish Cypriot administration.

Turkey’s struggle will continue even more determinedly, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said, emphasizing a sentiment that resonates strongly with both Türkiye and Turkish Cypriots.

In this light, Turkish Cypriots’ pursuit of recognition and self-determination aligns with Türkiye’s quest for strategic autonomy, strengthening the case for the TRNC’s independent sovereignty.
