PM Üstel Condemns Greek Cypriot Administration

In an assertive condemnation, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has accused the Greek Cypriot Administration of systemic human rights violations aimed at undermining the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

These actions, Üstel argues, are part of a broader strategy to isolate and economically destabilize the TRNC through politically motivated legal processes targeting property issues.

A Strategy of Intimidation

Prime Minister Üstel highlighted that the Greek side's pressure and intimidation policies against individuals on property matters are blatant attempts to weaken the TRNC's economy. He emphasized that these actions reflect the Greek Cypriot Administration's insincerity in their supposed commitment to peace and improved relations. Üstel stated, "The recent pressure and intimidation policies by the Greek Cypriot Administration are clear examples of their strategy to undermine the TRNC's economy through isolation and politically motivated legal processes".

Insincere Peace Efforts

Üstel criticized the Greek leadership for their hypocritical stance, noting their continued rhetoric about peace and federation negotiations while simultaneously engaging in actions that contradict these claims. He pointed out that the Greek Cypriot Administration's actions reveal their true intentions, which are far from fostering a peaceful and cooperative environment on the island.

Importance of National Unity

The Prime Minister underscored the necessity for national unity and solidarity among Turkish Cypriots and their unwavering alliance with Türkiye. He reiterated that the TRNC and Türkiye are steadfast in countering any attempts to undermine their sovereignty and rights. "Our state and government, together with Türkiye, are capable of countering all attempts against the Turkish Cypriots with determination and consistency," Üstel asserted.

The Immovable Property Commission

Üstel emphasized the significance of the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), recognized by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective legal remedy. Despite the Greek side's efforts to hinder its operations, the IPC continues to function, addressing property disputes in accordance with international law. The TRNC government has prioritized the IPC's effective functioning, allocating new funds and resources to ensure timely compensation and resolution of cases.

Human Rights Violations

The Prime Minister condemned the Greek Cypriot leadership's efforts to politicize property and legal matters by targeting individuals in court. He described these actions as unacceptable and a violation of human rights, stating, "We condemn these actions against individuals acting in accordance with the property regime, which aligns with international law and the European Convention on Human Rights, as they constitute human rights violations".

Call for International Attention

Üstel called on the international community to recognize the Greek Cypriot Administration's continued human rights violations and their persistent rejection of peace initiatives proposed by Turkish Cypriots. He emphasized that a permanent solution in Cyprus can only be achieved by acknowledging the realities on the island and ensuring sovereign equality for the TRNC.

TCE Conclusion

Prime Minister Üstel's strong statements reflect the TRNC's firm stance against the Greek Cypriot Administration's actions. The Turkish Cypriots, backed by Türkiye, are committed to resisting any form of intimidation and human rights violations, striving for a fair and lasting resolution to the Cyprus issue based on equal international status and sovereign equality. The Prime Minister's message is clear: the TRNC and its people will not be subdued by unjust policies and will continue to fight for their rights and sovereignty.
