Ersin Tatar addresses OIC
In a compelling address at the 15th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in The Gambia, President Ersin Tatar passionately advocated for the rights and international recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
President Tatar's speech was not merely a formal statement but a resolute call to action, urging the member states of the OIC to strengthen their ties with the TRNC and to actively participate in ending the international isolation imposed on Turkish Cypriots.
President Tatar eloquently detailed the long-standing grievances and challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots due to ongoing geopolitical tensions on the island. He emphasized that despite numerous attempts at peace negotiations under the guidance of various international entities, all efforts have been thwarted by the intransigence and denial of equal status to Turkish Cypriots by the Greek Cypriot administration. He proposed a paradigm shift in the approach to peace, suggesting that recognition of the sovereign equality and equal international status of Turkish Cypriots should be the new foundation for any future negotiations.
In his address, President Tatar also underscored the unwavering support of Türkiye in bolstering the TRNC’s position on the international stage. He highlighted how this support has been instrumental in the development and sustenance of the TRNC, and he called for a similar commitment from the OIC member states. He suggested that increased cooperation and stronger bilateral relations with OIC countries could serve as a significant step towards rectifying the unjust isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
Moreover, President Tatar appealed to the values and principles that the OIC stands for, invoking a sense of solidarity among Muslim nations to support an oppressed Muslim community in Cyprus. He stressed that it is not only a political imperative but also a moral duty for the OIC to take a stand against the injustices faced by Turkish Cypriots.
Finally, President Tatar concluded his address by expressing hope and determination, stating that with the support of the OIC and the international community, a just and lasting solution for Cyprus can be achieved. He envisioned a future where Turkish Cypriots are no longer marginalized but are recognized as equal partners in shaping the destiny of Cyprus.
President Tatar’s address marks a significant moment in the pursuit of justice and equality for Turkish Cypriots, calling for a collective effort from the Islamic world to support their cause and recognize their rights. His message resonates with a deep sense of urgency and a plea for actionable solidarity from the global Islamic community.
