During a deeply significant address in London, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Ünal Üstel reaffirmed the Turkish Cypriot diaspora's vital role in representing their homeland.

Speaking before a gathering of dignitaries, business leaders, and community members, the Prime Minister delivered a powerful message: Turkish Cypriots living abroad are not merely individuals who have left their homeland—they are its pride, its voice, and its reflection to the wider world.

The event, hosted by Londra Gazete, Euromed, Alton & Co, Best Motors Coachworks, and UKAY Ltd., celebrated the cultural and political contributions of Turkish Cypriots in the United Kingdom, which boasts one of the largest Turkish Cypriot diasporic communities in the world. The Prime Minister's remarks were filled with gratitude, admiration, and a call to action for unity and advocacy.

A Bridge Between Cultures: The Role of the Diaspora

In his speech, Prime Minister Üstel passionately underscored the crucial role Turkish Cypriots play as cultural ambassadors abroad. “No matter where we live, at the heart of our identity lies the pride and honor of Cyprus,” Üstel stated. “You are not only the children of our homeland but also its representatives to the world. Being a Turkish Cypriot means carrying the struggle, dignity, and values of a people.”  

This reflection emphasized the responsibility of Turkish Cypriots to preserve their heritage and introduce it to the nations they inhabit. Indeed, the Turkish Cypriot community in Britain has demonstrated its ability to do so, blending seamlessly into British society while retaining a distinct cultural identity.

A Dual Success: Integration Without Assimilation

The Turkish Cypriot diaspora in the UK serves as a model for cultural preservation amid successful integration. With a history stretching back to the early 20th century, many Turkish Cypriots initially migrated to Britain seeking economic opportunities. Over time, they established themselves in fields such as politics, education, and business, while continuing to celebrate and share their traditions.  

Üstel lauded this accomplishment: “The ability of our people to thrive in a foreign country while remaining deeply rooted in their heritage shows the strength of our culture and identity. This is the greatest example we can set for future generations.”

Türkiye: A Pillar of Support

A significant part of the Prime Minister’s message was the bond between the TRNC and Türkiye. Reaffirming Türkiye’s role as the TRNC’s staunchest ally, Üstel remarked, “Türkiye has been our greatest supporter in our fight for existence, standing by us politically, economically, and militarily. The bond we share with Türkiye is not merely historical solidarity but an integral part of our national identity.”  

Türkiye’s support has been pivotal, particularly amid ongoing international isolation and efforts by Greek Cypriots to suppress Turkish Cypriot voices on the global stage. The Prime Minister’s remarks echoed sentiments shared by many Turkish Cypriots, who view Türkiye not only as an ally but as an intrinsic part of their political and cultural resilience.

A Call for Advocacy and Solidarity

Prime Minister Üstel concluded his speech with a call to action for the diaspora to strengthen their advocacy for Turkish Cypriot rights. “It is only through unity that we can amplify our voice on international platforms,” he said.  

This appeal aligns with ongoing efforts by the TRNC to counter Greek Cypriot narratives, challenge global biases, and work toward recognition as a sovereign state. Turkish Cypriots abroad, particularly in influential centers like London, are uniquely positioned to contribute to this cause through political engagement and cultural diplomacy.

Honoring Lives Lost and Preserving Legacy

The evening also included a moment of remembrance for lives tragically lost in the Grand Kartal hotel fire in Bolu, Türkiye, and a commitment to honoring the memory of the “Şampiyon Melekler” (Champion Angels). The Prime Minister’s announcement of a dedicated memorial event underscored the community's deep commitment to honoring the past while forging a hopeful future.
