Ünal Üstel Highlights Strategic Role of OTS

In a significant development for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Prime Minister Ünal Üstel highlighted the growing international prestige of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) during a recent conference in Shusha.

Üstel expressed pride in Northern Cyprus' observer status within the OTS and emphasized the strong support from Türkiye and Azerbaijan. He articulated hopes for the TRNC to achieve full membership in the OTS, which would further solidify its international presence and support its political objectives.

Historical Context and Türkiye’s Role

The geopolitical significance of Northern Cyprus is rooted in its historical and strategic context. Since the Turkish military intervention in 1974, which aimed to protect Turkish Cypriots following a coup attempt to unite Cyprus with Greece, the island has been divided. The northern part declared independence as the TRNC in 1983, recognized only by Türkiye. This division has led to ongoing efforts by Türkiye to ensure the security and rights of Turkish Cypriots.

Erdogan's Vision for Peace and Stability

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye has been a steadfast advocate for the rights and recognition of Northern Cyprus. During his recent visit to the TRNC, Erdogan emphasized the importance of a two-state solution as the only viable resolution to the Cyprus conflict. This stance aligns with Türkiye's long-term commitment to a fair, permanent, and sustainable solution that guarantees the security of Turkish Cypriots.

Erdogan's support for reopening parts of Varosha, an abandoned town in Northern Cyprus, aims to revitalize the region and support its economic development. This initiative reflects Türkiye's broader strategy to bolster the TRNC's infrastructure and international standing.

Türkiye’s Commitment to Northern Cyprus

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz has reiterated Türkiye's unwavering support for Northern Cyprus. He emphasized overcoming international embargoes and championing the TRNC's right to international recognition and equal sovereignty. Yılmaz highlighted the productive collaboration between Türkiye and Northern Cyprus in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and economic development.

Yılmaz also praised the TRNC’s admission to the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) as an observer state, calling it a valuable step that underscores Türkiye’s support for a two-state solution. He assured that Türkiye would continue to support the TRNC with all its means, ensuring its rightful place in the international arena.

The Role of the OTS in Regional Stability

The OTS plays a crucial role in fostering cooperation among Turkic-speaking countries, enhancing regional stability, and addressing broader security and economic issues. The inclusion of Northern Cyprus in the OTS framework is a strategic move that aligns the interests of Turkic states and supports the TRNC's political and economic objectives.

TCE Conclusion

The Organization of Turkic States is pivotal in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the region, with Northern Cyprus' observer status highlighting the strategic importance of its inclusion. The support from Türkiye and other member states underscores the broader implications for international relations and regional stability. As Northern Cyprus navigates its path towards greater international recognition and integration, the OTS provides a vital platform for advancing its political and economic objectives in a complex and evolving geopolitical context.
