UK MP Iain Duncan Smith Calls again for Direct Flights

UK Conservative Party MP Iain Duncan Smith has renewed his call for direct flights from the UK to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), underscoring the significant challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots due to the ongoing international isolation of Northern Cyprus.

This issue has been a longstanding concern for Smith, who represents a constituency with a considerable Turkish Cypriot population.

The Historical and Political Context

The division of Cyprus, following a violent uprising against British rule and the Turkish Cypriots from 1963 up until a Greek-led coup in July of 1974 resulting in a subsequent Turkish military intervention, led to the establishment of the TRNC in 1983. However, the TRNC is recognized only by Türkiye, leaving it subject to international embargoes and restrictions. This isolation significantly affects the daily lives of Turkish Cypriots, particularly in terms of travel and trade.

Current Travel Restrictions

Currently, travelers to Northern Cyprus must endure indirect routes, typically involving stopovers in Türkiye. This situation contrasts sharply with Southern Cyprus, which benefits from direct flights to and from numerous international destinations. Smith emphasized this disparity, noting that it causes "inconvenience for travelers," particularly for those needing to visit properties or family members in Northern Cyprus.

Smith's Advocacy

Smith's advocacy for direct flights is driven by the need to alleviate these inconveniences and to support his Turkish Cypriot constituents. He stated, “I have been campaigning for direct flights to Northern Cyprus for some time now. Currently, Ercan Airport (LCEN) serves as the main hub for Northern Cyprus. While Southern Cyprus benefits from direct flights, Northern Cyprus can only offer flights with one or two stopovers, causing inconvenience for travelers. My call for direct flights supports my Turkish Cypriot constituents who need to visit their properties regularly and assist their elderly relatives."

Government Response and Challenges

Despite Smith's persistent efforts, the UK Government maintains its position against direct flights to the TRNC. The primary justification revolves around the status of Ercan Airport, which is not recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Consequently, the UK cannot negotiate an Air Services Agreement with Northern Cyprus.

Smith's frustration with the UK Government's stance is palpable. He explained, “I have raised this issue with the Government multiple times on behalf of my Turkish Cypriot constituents. The Foreign Office has explained that Ercan Airport is not recognized as an international airport by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Therefore, the UK Government cannot negotiate an Air Services Agreement with the Northern Cyprus administration, hindering the resumption of direct flights."

Security and Diplomatic Hurdles

In an effort to address security concerns, the UK Government had previously advised a UK security company to assess Ercan Airport. Although the company provided recommendations for the airport to meet UK security standards, further inspections were obstructed by the Republic of Cyprus, thus perpetuating the stalemate.

Smith lamented this diplomatic impasse, stating, “It is time to end such an unfair and restrictive travel ban. If re-elected as the MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, I will continue to call on the Government to permit direct flights between the UK and Northern Cyprus and to prevent further isolation of Turkish Cypriots from the international community."

The Broader Implications

Smith's call for direct flights is more than a logistical issue; it is a plea for recognition and equality for Turkish Cypriots. Direct flights would not only facilitate easier travel but also symbolize a step towards reducing the political and economic isolation of Northern Cyprus.

Moving Forward

The push for direct flights to the TRNC is a significant issue that requires persistent advocacy and diplomatic efforts. Smith's commitment to this cause highlights the broader need for the international community to re-evaluate its stance on Northern Cyprus and seek more inclusive and equitable solutions. Ending the isolation of Turkish Cypriots would foster greater regional stability and contribute to a more just and interconnected world.

TCE Conclusion

The plight of Turkish Cypriots and their call for direct flights to Northern Cyprus is a critical issue that deserves urgent attention. As Smith continues his campaign, the hope is that increased awareness and advocacy will lead to positive change, bridging divides and ending the unfair isolation faced by the TRNC.
